Rib Fracture Test

If you suspect that an athlete may have a rib fracture, rather than squeezing the sore area, try this approach. Place your hands on both right and left sides of the rib cage, using moderate pressure. Instruct the athlete to take a deep breath. Then, repeat this procedure without any pressure on the ribs. If inhalation is easier and less painful with pressure on the ribs, suspect a fracture. If this test is positive please seek appropriate medical attention.
