This arthroscopic photo shows Fairbanks changes in a knee. This is from a 65 year old man who is ACL deficient and underwent bilateral open, total meniscus resections several years ago. The large object in the center of the frame is a loose body, probably from the femoral head (white object at top). The femoral head shows advanced degeneration, which is illustrated by the "fuzzy" and irregular appearing surface of the bone. The area in bottom, left background is the tibial plateau. The red is "raw bone" that has resulted from the loss of the meniscal and articular cartilage. This photo shows an advanced state of arthritis that will ultimately result in a total knee replacement. |
