How Often Should Water Breaks be Taken During Workouts?

Water breaks should be taken at different intervals depending on the outside heat and humidity or the heat index.  As a general rule, the higher the heat index the more frequent the breaks.  It is also advisable to have water available for drinking at any time during the practice.  Do not ever withhold water, rather encourage its consumption.  Water should be replaced relative to the amount of weight lost during a practice session.  The general rule is for every pound of weight lost, one quart of water should be consumed.  Fluid replacement should be in the form of water, Gatorade® (or equivalent), NOT caffeine containing beverages.  Caffeine is a diuretic which causes a higher urinary loss of fluids.
